This 1999 remake of the 1970’s film of the same title, written by Neil Simon, stars Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn and earns a Worth the Search rating from us. While the movie has not won particularly favorable reviews, either initially and over the 21 years since its release, it got our relatively high rating because there are several scenes that are either very humorous or quite touching and John Cleese’s performance as the Hotel Manager, Mersault, is both classic Cleese and hilarious. While the story of empty nest syndrome and waning relationship is all too familiar, nonetheless, overcoming all too many obstacles throughout the film (some funny, some sad) results in a (spoiler alert!) predictable happy ending for Henry (Steve Martin) and Nancy (Goldie Hawn).
